What is Railway Curry?

Railway Mutton Curry is an Indian dish with a rich history and a flavourful blend of spices that has become a favourite among foodies throughout the world. The story of Railway Mutton Curry begins during the colonial era when the British introduced the railways to India in the mid-19th century, and with it, they brought their love for stews. So, the railway cooks came up with a unique recipe for this hearty and satisfying dish that could be prepared in large quantities; it was a great option for their guests who did not have the palate for lots of spice in traditional Indian Food. It was the staple food on the newly built railroad running straight from Amritsar, Punjab.

The curry was typically served with rice or naan, and sometimes accompanied by a side of pickles or chutney. The dish was so beloved that it even inspired a famous Bollywood song in the 1950s, “Mere Sapno Ki Rani” from the film Aradhana!
